Cách duy trì một cuộc hội thoại trong tiếng anh

Đọc sau buổi học: Làm sao để cuộc trò chuyện không bị “tắt”?

Khi nói tiếng Anh, bạn không cần dùng những câu thật dài hoặc từ vựng thật khó.

Một cuộc trò chuyện tự nhiên thường chỉ cần ba kỹ năng:

Answer → Add → Ask

1. Answer: Trả lời câu hỏi.
2. Add: Thêm một chi tiết.
3. Ask: Hỏi lại người đối diện.

Khi nghe người khác nói, bạn cũng có thể dùng:

Listen → React → Follow up

A Conversation at a Business Dinner

Van is attending a dinner in Ho Chi Minh City. A friend introduces her to Daniel, a businessman from Singapore.

Daniel: Hi, I'm Daniel. Nice to meet you.

Van: Nice to meet you too. I'm Van. Are you visiting Ho Chi Minh City for work?

Daniel: Yes. I'm here for a few meetings. This is actually only my second time in Vietnam.

Van: Really? When did you come here the first time?

Daniel: About three years ago. I didn't have much free time then, so I didn't see much of the city.

Van: Oh, I see. You should try to explore a little more this time. Ho Chi Minh City has changed quite a lot in the last few years.

Daniel: I'm sure it has. Do you live here?

Van: Yes, I do. I've lived here for many years. My family is here too, so most of my life is in Ho Chi Minh City. How about you? Do you live in Singapore?

Daniel: Yes, with my wife and daughter.

Van: That's nice. How old is your daughter?

Daniel: She's twelve.

Van: My children are older now, but I remember when they were that age. Life was very busy!

They both laugh.

After a few minutes, Daniel asks Van about her work.

Daniel: So, what do you do?

Van: I'm involved in a company that imports and distributes medical equipment. We work with different customers in the medical sector, so I meet quite a lot of people through my work.

Daniel: Interesting. What kind of medical equipment do you work with?

Van pauses. She knows what she wants to say, but she does not know the English name of one machine.

Van: I don't know the exact word in English, but it's a machine that doctors use to check a patient's condition. It shows information such as their heart rate and other important numbers.

Daniel: Ah, like a patient monitor?

Van: Yes, exactly! That's what I mean.

Daniel: How long have you been working in this business?

Van: Quite a while. I enjoy the people side of the work. I like meeting clients, talking to different people and building relationships. How about you? What line of work are you in?

Daniel: I work in property investment.

Van: Really? How did you get into that?

The conversation continues.

Vân không chỉ trả lời câu hỏi.

Khi Daniel hỏi:

Do you live here?

Vân trả lời:

Yes, I do.

Nhưng cô ấy không dừng lại ở đó.

Cô ấy thêm:

I've lived here for many years. My family is here too, so most of my life is in Ho Chi Minh City.

Sau đó cô ấy hỏi:

How about you? Do you live in Singapore?

Đây là:

Really? cho Daniel biết rằng Vân đang lắng nghe.

Sau đó cô ấy hỏi một câu liên quan trực tiếp đến điều Daniel vừa nói.

Không biết một từ không có nghĩa là phải dừng nói

Khi Daniel hỏi về một loại thiết bị y tế, Vân không biết từ tiếng Anh chính xác.

Thay vì im lặng hoặc chuyển ngay sang tiếng Việt, cô ấy nói:

I don't know the exact word in English, but...

Sau đó cô ấy mô tả chức năng của thiết bị:

It's a machine that doctors use to check a patient's condition.

Daniel vẫn hiểu được ý của cô ấy.

Đây là một kỹ năng giao tiếp quan trọng:

Communication first. Vocabulary second.

Mục tiêu không phải là biết tất cả mọi từ.

Mục tiêu là tiếp tục truyền đạt ý của mình ngay cả khi thiếu từ vựng.

Hãy tưởng tượng bạn vừa gặp một người mới tại một bữa tối hoặc sự kiện.

Người đó hỏi:

What do you do?

Trả lời bằng 2–3 câu, sau đó hỏi lại người đó một câu.

Bạn có thể bắt đầu:

I enjoy...

How about you?

Sau đó tưởng tượng người kia nói:

I travel quite a lot for work.

Bạn không cần nói tiếng Anh hoàn hảo để trở thành một người dễ nói chuyện.
