Cause → Result: Academic Noun Phrases
Cách viết quan hệ nguyên nhân–kết quả gọn và học thuật bằng noun phrase + lead to / result in / contribute to.
Mục tiêu
Trong IELTS Writing Task 2, em thường cần làm một việc rất rõ:
X xảy ra → Y là kết quả
Một cách viết đơn giản là dùng mệnh đề:
When X happens, Y follows.
Ví dụ:
When students rely heavily on AI, they may retain less knowledge.
Câu này đúng. Nhưng khi ý đã rõ, em có thể viết gọn và học thuật hơn bằng noun phrase:
Heavy reliance on AI may lead to weaker knowledge retention.
Điểm quan trọng không phải là “dùng danh từ cho khó”.
Mục tiêu là nén một quan hệ nguyên nhân → kết quả thành một câu rõ, chính xác và dễ phát triển tiếp.
1. Hai cách diễn đạt cùng một logic
Version A — Clause version
When students rely heavily on AI, they may retain less knowledge.
Cấu trúc:
When + clause, clause
Version B — Academic noun-phrase version
Heavy reliance on AI may lead to weaker knowledge retention.
Cấu trúc:
NOUN PHRASE (cause) + may/can + lead to + NOUN PHRASE (result)
So sánh:
| Cause | Result |
|---|---|
| students rely heavily on AI | students retain less knowledge |
| heavy reliance on AI | weaker knowledge retention |
2. Ba cấu trúc nên dùng
A. X can/may lead to Y
Heavy reliance on AI can lead to weaker knowledge retention.
B. X can/may result in Y
Excessive dependence on digital tools may result in poorer independent performance.
C. X can/may contribute to Y
Dùng khi X là một yếu tố, không nhất thiết là nguyên nhân duy nhất.
Limited face-to-face interaction can contribute to social isolation.
Function
Cả ba cấu trúc đều giúp em:
- chỉ ra cause → result rõ hơn;
- tránh viết nhiều câu rời;
- tạo academic tone tự nhiên;
- phát triển lập luận mà không cần thêm connector máy móc như
Thereforeở mọi câu.
3. Sau lead to / result in / contribute to dùng gì?
Các cấu trúc này thường đi với:
noun / noun phrase
✅ Heavy reliance on AI can lead to weaker knowledge retention.
✅ Poor time management may result in lower academic performance.
✅ Limited supervision can contribute to unsafe internet use.
Có thể dùng V-ing, nhưng với IELTS Writing, hãy ưu tiên một noun phrase tự nhiên khi có sẵn.
✅ This can lead to students becoming dependent on AI.
Nhưng nếu có noun phrase gọn hơn:
✅ This can lead to greater dependence on AI.
4. Cách biến một clause thành noun phrase
Không cần “nominalise” mọi từ. Hãy tìm cụm danh từ tự nhiên.
| Clause idea | Natural noun phrase |
|---|---|
| students rely heavily on AI | heavy reliance on AI |
| students use AI too much | overuse of AI / excessive AI use |
| students depend on AI | dependence on AI |
| students retain less knowledge | weaker / reduced knowledge retention |
| students think less independently | reduced independent thinking |
| students perform worse in exams | poorer exam performance |
| children have little supervision | limited parental supervision |
| people interact less face to face | reduced face-to-face interaction |
Useful rule
Do not search for the fanciest noun. Search for the most natural noun phrase.
For example:
❌ the replacement of the thinking process of students
✅ reduced independent thinking
❌ the receiving of a low score
✅ poorer exam performance
5. Precision still matters
An academic noun phrase does not automatically make a claim accurate.
Too strong:
AI use leads to loss of independent thinking.
More defensible:
Heavy reliance on AI for assessed work can lead to reduced independent thinking.
The stronger version tells the reader:
- how much? → heavy reliance
- where/when? → for assessed work
- how certain? → can
- what exact effect? → reduced independent thinking
For high-band writing, the claim should be no stronger than the reasoning behind it.
6. Example from the AI topic
Clause-heavy version
When students completely rely on AI to do their assignments, they may not retain useful knowledge, even if they receive good scores.
More academic version
Heavy reliance on AI for assignments may lead to weaker knowledge retention, even when students achieve high practice scores.
The academic version is better because it compresses the same logic:
heavy reliance on AI → weaker knowledge retention
7. Building a deeper cause–result chain
Do not stop after one link if the idea needs development.
Step 1
Heavy reliance on AI can reduce independent thinking.
Step 2
Reduced independent thinking may lead to weaker unaided performance under exam conditions.
Now the reasoning is:
heavy reliance on AI
→ reduced independent thinking
→ weaker unaided exam performance
This is useful Task 2 development because each sentence explains how one effect creates the next effect.
8. Avoid these common problems
Problem 1 — Verb after lead to
❌ Heavy reliance on AI can lead to perform worse.
✅ Heavy reliance on AI can lead to poorer performance.
✅ Heavy reliance on AI can lead to students performing worse.
Problem 2 — Unnatural noun phrase
❌ the over-relying of students on AI
✅ heavy reliance on AI
Problem 3 — Claim is too absolute
❌ AI use leads to poor exam scores.
✅ Excessive dependence on AI during practice can contribute to poorer unaided exam performance.
Problem 4 — Noun phrases become too heavy
❌ The excessive utilisation of artificial-intelligence-based educational assistance by students can...
✅ Heavy reliance on AI tools can...
Academic writing should be precise, not unnecessarily complicated.
9. Quick writing routine
Before writing a cause–result sentence, ask:
- What exactly is X?
- Can I express X as a natural noun phrase?
- What exactly is Y?
- Can I express Y as a natural noun phrase?
- Is the relationship certain, or should I use
can / may? - Does my sentence say more than my evidence can prove?
Then build:
X + can/may + lead to / result in / contribute to + Y
10. Final model
Heavy reliance on AI for academic assignments can reduce opportunities for students to think through problems independently. This reduction in independent practice may lead to weaker knowledge retention and poorer unaided performance under exam conditions.
Notice the chain:
heavy reliance
→ reduced independent practice
→ weaker retention / poorer performance
That is the writing job: make the causal mechanism easy for the reader to follow.
